A Fair Deal For Teachers

News from Barbara Boxer, United States Senator from
 California

- - - - - NEWS FROM BARBARA BOXER, UNITED STATES SENATOR FROM CALIFORNIA - - - - -

Dear Friend:

I am pleased to let you know that I have joined the effort to repeal two provisions of Social Security law that negatively impact so many of our public servants, including teachers.

During the Social Security overhauls in 1977 and 1983, two provisions were added to prevent public employees from receiving undue compensation. Unfortunately, the real impact unjustly undercompensates people who choose public service. The bill that I have joined in introducing would repeal both the government pension offset and the windfall elimination provisions. Both of these provisions reduce Social Security benefits for public servants or their spouses despite the fact that they have paid into Social Security.

At a time when many people are making retirement decisions in the face of falling retirement funds, we should offer to public employees these important changes that will provide greater financial security in their retirement years.

These changes are also important to our schools as they seek to retain the best teachers. This legislation will make it possible for them to offer more secure retirement futures for their staff members.

Sincerely,

Barbara Boxer
United States Senator

Supplemental Teaching Material

Teachers, please think about supplemental material that would assist your studnets and can become available to them via check-out or by a visit to the library. We need things that are not available in class such as videos, books or even websites that will provide additional resources for the students (RSS feeds for example).
Thank you.

Act Now to Protect CTE

Below is excerpts from a letter from Rocky Bettar, Chair ACSA Region 15 Adult Committee.

In short, the letter introduces a web site that you might find interesting as a CTE Teacher. Below is the website link for getreal.com.

Visit Getrealca.com and click on "Take Action Now" to learn about the following:

Categorical funding and local district flexibility are being discussed right now in the Legislature - both of which can be detrimental to our CTE goals. The time for action is now!

Please help us educate legislators and the media on the importance of career technical education - and how devastating it could be if the categorical funding for CTE is reduced or even diverted to other programs.

Your help is vital !!!

here's what to do:

Sign a letter to your legislator - GetREAL has drafted sample letters from a student, teacher and business leader available below as downloads. The letters emphasize the importance of career technical education and the adverse impact that proposed categorical funding measures could have on its success.

Please personalize your own letter and send to your Assemblymember and Senator representing your area.

Sign a Letter-to-the-Editor - GetREAL has drafted sample letters-to-the-editor for signature, personalization and submission by GetREAL's students, teachers and business/industry leaders to your local newspapers. Please download the applicable letter, personalize and send in to your local newspaper as soon as possible. Instructions for submitting letters-to-the-editor can be found on your newspaper's website.

Please act now! And if you need assistance in contacting your local paper, or anything else, please email staff@getrealca.com for assistance.
